MA Economics Without Maths: What Colleges Really Ask For, and the NIOS Maths (311) Route

8 min readMasters Economics Entrances

"Maths weak hai, MA Economics nahi hoga." "I didn't take maths in Class 11 and 12. Have I closed the door?" We hear this more than almost any other worry, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a pep talk.

The straight answer: the door is not closed, but it is not wide open either. Most good MA/MSc Economics programmes want some proof of maths. A few don't. And there are practical ways to fix a gap, if you start early. Nothing here is a promise of admission. Each university's own bulletin decides, and bulletins change every year.

Start here: a ten-minute win

Pick three programmes you like. Open each one's latest admission notice or prospectus and find the line about mathematics. Copy those three lines into one note on your phone, word for word. Next to each, write one of three labels: "need 10+2 maths", "UG maths course is enough" or "no maths rule found".

You now know what you are actually dealing with, and that is better than any rumour in a WhatsApp group.

What colleges actually say

We checked the official pages and notices for the programmes below. They are from the most recent cycle we could find, so treat them as examples of the pattern, not as this year's rules.

ProgrammeWhat the official source says about maths
Delhi School of Economics (admission through CUET PG)Mathematics in Class XII, or at least 4 credits of mathematics in the bachelor's degree (2026-27 bulletin). Economics Honours graduates from Delhi University are a separate route
IGIDR, MSc Economics (CUET PG)Mathematics at 10+2 or its NIOS equivalent, or higher. Students who studied maths as part of an eligible bachelor's degree can also apply (2026 notice)
Madras School of Economics, MA programmesMathematics at plus-two level or equivalent, which includes a NIOS senior secondary maths pass, or an undergraduate mathematical economics course. Admission is through MSE's own entrance test (2026-27 advertisement)
Centre for Development Studies, MA Applied Economics (CUET PG)Bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50%, and a paper in mathematics, statistics or another quantitative subject at 10+2 or undergraduate level (2026-27 notice)
University of Hyderabad, MA Economics (CUET PG)Bachelor's in economics, or in an allied subject with higher marks. The department says high-school-level maths is expected because many courses are mathematical
Ashoka University, MA EconomicsA recognised undergraduate degree in any discipline. An economics degree is not a prerequisite. A Math Camp before the semester is mandatory
Azim Premji University, MA EconomicsBachelor's degree in any discipline, economics preferred but not mandatory. The eligibility page lists no maths prerequisite, but the programme is maths-heavy, so confirm with admissions
Symbiosis School of Economics, MScAny graduate with exposure to economics, maths, statistics or physics. Selection is by an online interview that tests economics, maths and statistics. The page is dated, so confirm

Three things stand out.

  1. A genuinely maths-free route is rare. Most programmes accept either 10+2 maths or a maths or quantitative course at university level.
  2. The "UG course" door is the most useful one for you. DSE, MSE and CDS all name it in some form. It is also the one you can still open.
  3. Some colleges that sound flexible still test maths. Symbiosis does it in the interview. Ashoka and Azim Premji run maths-heavy programmes and make you catch up.

Two names we are not including: we could not confirm JNU's maths rule from its pages, and Presidency University's notice was not clear enough to quote. Check both directly. For comparing DSE, JNU and IGIDR as destinations, read our DSE vs JNU vs IGIDR guide.

Also remember: a good entrance score does not override an eligibility rule. People are sometimes rejected after a strong exam because the maths condition was not met. Read the bulletin before you build your plan, and read our CUET PG eligibility guide for MA Economics.

Fixing a maths gap: the NIOS route

NIOS, the National Institute of Open Schooling, is the route many students use. The subject you want is Mathematics (311) at the Senior Secondary level. Be careful with the code: Mathematics (211) is the Secondary course (Class 10 level), which is not the one you need.

IGIDR and MSE both name a NIOS senior secondary maths pass in their notices, which is reassuring. But a university can set its own rule, so confirm with the one you are targeting.

Where the admission portal stands today. NIOS's admission portal (sdmis.nios.ac.in) shows Stream 1 Block 1 as closed and Block 2, for the October 2027 exam, as open. We could not find the last dates on the portal pages we saw, so check them there.

On-demand exams. NIOS also runs On-Demand Examinations. The last official notice we found covered 6 January to 25 March 2026, held at Regional Centre Delhi and identified Kendriya Vidyalayas, with registration from 24 December 2025. So these are held in windows and at specific centres, and are not available at any time. Ask NIOS or your regional centre what applies to you.

The timing reality. For CUET PG, the tentative NTA calendar puts the exam in March 2027. An exam taken in October 2027 will not help you there. For the 2028 cycle, the question to ask is whether your NIOS result will come before the application window and whether your target university accepts it.

Another route some students use is an undergraduate maths course from a university such as NSOU or IGNOU. Check with the programme you want whether it counts.

How much does NIOS 311 cover?

Keep two goals separate: passing NIOS 311 (which is about eligibility) and preparing for the entrance (which is about marks). EduSure compared the official NIOS 311 syllabus with the CUET PG Economics mathematical methods syllabus in October 2026. Our reading is that NIOS 311 covers a good part of it: sets, functions, limits, differentiation and integration, differential equations, matrices and determinants, probability, vectors and linear programming.

Two areas in the entrance syllabus are not covered by NIOS 311, and need a separate maths-for-economics course or an undergraduate book: multi-variable optimisation and difference equations. In the other direction, some NIOS topics, such as complex numbers, conic sections, trigonometry and three-dimensional geometry, matter for the NIOS exam but little for the entrance. Please read both syllabus documents yourself too.

A plan you can start this week

  1. Collect the bulletin lines from your ten-minute win.
  2. Decide your cycle. If the maths condition is a problem for 2027, you may be planning for 2028. That is not a setback. It gives you time to build maths properly.
  3. Pick the route that fits your colleges. If they accept 10+2 maths or NIOS, look at NIOS 311. If a UG maths course is enough, look at that.
  4. Build maths in parallel, starting with functions, differentiation, optimisation, matrices, probability and basic statistics. They feel far less scary when you learn them with an economics example. Our post on overcoming math anxiety has ideas.
  5. Learn the entrance. Our CUET PG 8-month roadmap shows how a beginner can organise the preparation.

On courses, honestly: no EduSure course gives you 10+2 maths. That has to come from NIOS or a university course. Once your eligibility is sorted, EduSure's Eco Foundation is built as the longer track for the 2028 cycle and later, and CUET PG is the relevant course if you are aiming at 2027.

FAQ

Can I do MA Economics without maths in Class 12? Sometimes, but most good programmes want 10+2 maths or a maths course at university. Check each bulletin.

Is NIOS maths accepted? IGIDR and MSE name it in their notices. Other universities may differ, so confirm with the one you want.

Which NIOS code should I pick? Mathematics (311), Senior Secondary. Mathematics (211) is the Secondary course.

Will NIOS finish before CUET PG 2027? No, not if you take the October 2027 exam. Plan for the 2028 cycle.

Does business statistics count as a maths course? It depends on the university's wording. Ask before you rely on it.

Where should I check all this? On each university's admission page and on the NIOS portal.

Please verify eligibility, dates and fees on each university's official website and on NIOS before acting on anything here.
