Which IITs Admit via JAM vs GATE — The Definitive Map

This was the most-asked question in the pre-session poll. The key distinction: JAM Economics opens three IITs; GATE (XH-C1) Economics opens IIT Madras.

This was the second major session segment — the week-by-week roadmap that students asked for.

September 2026 — Register + Foundation Sprint

Week 1 (8–14 Sept): Register for JAM 2027 when it opens 12 Sept. If doing GATE too, complete GOAPS registration before 27 Sept.
Weeks 2–4: Microeconomics foundations — consumer theory (Marshallian/Hicksian demand, Slutsky), production and costs, market equilibrium. Daily 2–3 hours.
Alongside: Linear algebra, calculus, basic probability — high-yield in both JAM and GATE, and these don't require a full separate session to build.

October–November 2026 — Syllabus Coverage

October: Macroeconomics — IS-LM, AD-AS, Keynesian consumption models, open economy basics. Start Game Theory (Cournot, Bertrand, Nash equilibrium, mixed strategies).
November: Indian Economy, International Trade, Public Finance. First sectional tests by mid-November.

December 2026 — Acceleration

Q: Is GATE harder than JAM for Economics? The Economics depth is comparable. The difference is format: JAM is 100% Economics; GATE adds 25 marks of Reasoning & Comprehension and 15 marks of General Aptitude. Students who underestimate these non-Economics sections lose the exam on the margins. Factor 1–1.5 hours per week of GA and RC practice from October onward.

Q: What score do I need for IIT Delhi MSc Economics? Official cutoffs are not published in advance. Historically, JAM Economics general category cutoffs for IIT Delhi have been in the 40–55 marks range (40%–55%), varying with the year's difficulty. The exact number depends on the cohort. Apply to all IITs you're eligible for — waitlist movement is significant and self-screening before results is a strategy error.

Q: Does IIT Madras MA Development Economics also require GATE? Yes — both MA Economics and MA Development Economics at IIT Madras are via GATE (XH-C1). IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Roorkee admit via JAM. There is no GATE route to the JAM-route IITs, and no JAM route to IIT Madras.
