IIT GATE Economics 2027: Registration, Exam Dates, XH-C1 Syllabus & 6-Month Strategy

8 min readMasters Economics Entrances

On 20 July 2026, IIT Madras released the official GATE 2027 Information Brochure — and for Economics aspirants, this is the quietest, most underrated opportunity in the MA/MSc Economics entrance calendar. While everyone debates CUET PG cutoffs and ISI difficulty, GATE Economics (XH-C1) quietly opens doors to M.A. Economics at IIT Madras, M.Sc. Economics at IIT Kanpur, and PhD programmes at IITs.

This guide covers everything verified from the official GATE 2027 notification: the exact dates (including the registration reschedule), eligibility, the XH-C1 Economics paper structure, syllabus, and a preparation strategy that fits alongside your JAM and CUET PG prep.

What's New in GATE 2027

IIT Madras has introduced several changes this cycle:

  • New paper: Robotics & Automation (RA) — irrelevant for Economics aspirants, but signals the exam's evolution
  • Revised syllabi and updated paper codes for XE (Engineering Sciences), XH (Humanities & Social Sciences), and XL (Life Sciences) sections
  • Live facial verification during registration and at the exam centre
  • DigiLocker integration for smoother document verification
  • Two-paper combination: Candidates can appear in up to two papers from an approved combination (single application only — multiple applications are rejected without refund)

The Economics Paper: XH-C1 Explained

GATE Economics is not a standalone paper — it is section C1 of the XH (Humanities and Social Sciences) paper. Here is the exact structure:

ComponentMarksNotes
General Aptitude (GA)15Common to all GATE papers
XH-B1: Reasoning & Comprehension25Compulsory — reading comprehension, expression, analytical & logical reasoning
XH-C1: Economics (optional section)60Your chosen section
Total10065 questions, 3 hours, CBT mode

Marking scheme:

  • MCQ (1 mark): +1 correct, −1/3 wrong
  • MCQ (2 marks): +2 correct, −2/3 wrong
  • MSQ: no negative marking, but no partial credit — all correct options must be selected
  • NAT: no negative marking

What this means strategically: The Economics section is 60 of 100 marks — but GA (15) and Reasoning & Comprehension (25) together are 40 marks that are highly coachable with practice. Do not treat them as afterthoughts.

XH-C1 Economics Syllabus: The Core Blocks

Per the official GATE syllabus, XH-C1 Economics covers:

  • Microeconomics: Consumer theory (cardinal & ordinal approaches, Marshallian/Hicksian demand, Slutsky equation, revealed preference), production & costs, market equilibrium & stability, decision-making under uncertainty, asymmetric information, game theory (mixed strategies, Bayesian Nash, SPNE)
  • Macroeconomics: National income, IS-LM, AD-AS, consumption & investment theories, money & banking, inflation & unemployment, open economy, growth models
  • Statistics & Econometrics: Probability, distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, OLS properties
  • International, Public & Development Economics: Trade theories, BoP, exchange rates, public finance, development indices
  • Indian Economy: Growth, reforms, fiscal & monetary policy, sectoral trends

Note on topic weightages: Like IIT JAM Economics 2027, GATE Economics does not yet have a published EduSure question-level paper analysis (our master paper analysis covers CUET PG and UGC NET). The syllabus blocks above reflect the official XH-C1 structure. The good news: the core Micro-Macro-Stats spine overlaps heavily with CUET PG and JAM — see our CUET PG Economics 2027 Syllabus Decoded for topic-level priority guidance that transfers well.

Extra valueIIT Madras M.A. Economics + IIT Kanpur M.Sc. Economics (routes JAM alone does not cover)

For EduSure students targeting multiple entrances, GATE is the natural companion to JAM — the syllabi overlap heavily, and EduSure runs a combined JAM + GATE preparation track. GATE's extra value: a valid GATE Economics score opens the IIT Madras M.A. Economics intake and IIT Kanpur M.Sc. Economics — routes JAM does not cover.

The 6-Month GATE Strategy (Late August → Mid-February)

Phase 1 — Months 1–2 (Late Aug to Mid-Oct): Core Build + Registration

  • Register now if you haven't already — GOAPS is live, regular deadline 27 Sep 2026
  • Daily: 2 hours Micro/Macro theory + 1.5 hours Maths/Stats + 30 minutes GA practice
  • Start Reasoning & Comprehension practice early — it is 25 marks and skills-based, not syllabus-based

Phase 2 — Months 3–4 (Mid-Oct to Mid-Dec): Coverage + Sectional Tests

  • Finish the XH-C1 syllabus blocks; begin Econometrics applications
  • Weekly: 1 sectional timed test + 1 GA/Reasoning practice set + error log
  • Solve GATE XH-C1 PYQs chapter-wise as you finish units

Phase 3 — Months 5–6 (Mid-Dec to Mid-Feb): Full Mocks + PYQ Mastery

  • 2 full mocks per week in January; 3 per week in early February
  • Solve all available GATE XH-C1 PYQs under timed conditions from the GATE Economics past-paper library
  • Final 2 weeks: formula sheets, error log, light mocks; sleep cycle synced to your exam weekend

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is GATE 2027 registration open? Yes — the GOAPS portal went live on 2 September 2026. Apply at goaps.iitm.ac.in. Regular registration closes 27 September 2026; extended registration with late fee closes 5 October 2026.

2. Can I appear in both GATE and IIT JAM? Yes — and many EduSure students do. IIT JAM Economics 2027 is expected mid-February 2027; the syllabi overlap heavily. Check the exact JAM date when its brochure drops and plan your weekends accordingly.

3. What is the Economics paper code? XH-C1 — the Economics section of the XH (Humanities and Social Sciences) paper. You also write the compulsory XH-B1 (Reasoning & Comprehension) section and the common General Aptitude section.

4. Is there negative marking in GATE Economics? Only on MCQs (−1/3 for 1-mark, −2/3 for 2-mark). MSQs and NATs have no negative marking, but MSQs give no partial credit — select only options you can defend.

5. What can I do with a GATE Economics score? M.A. Economics at IIT Madras (25 seats), M.Sc. Economics at IIT Kanpur (accepts both GATE and JAM), and PhD programmes at IITs. Note: PSU recruitment through GATE applies to engineering papers, not the Economics (XH-C1) paper. GATE scores are valid for 3 years.

6. Where can I get GATE Economics PYQs? The EduSure past-paper library hosts IIT GATE Economics papers with solutions — free downloads at /past-papers/iit-gate.
