ISI MSQE 2027: Exam Pattern, Syllabus and a Month-by-Month Plan from November to May

8 min readMasters Economics Entrances

"Am I smart enough for ISI?" "What if I waste a year?" Almost every MSQE aspirant types some version of these questions into a search bar, usually late at night. If that is you, here is the honest picture: ISI is hard, but it is a particular kind of hard. It rewards people who build maths and statistics carefully and who practise writing full solutions. Seven months, spent in the right order, is enough time to do that.

This guide covers how the ISI MSQE tests work, what the official syllabus says, and how you could spread November to May. Everything about 2027 timing is an expectation until ISI publishes its own notice, so we say clearly which is which.

Start here: a five-minute win

Before you read further, open ISI's official syllabus page (admission.isical.ac.in, then "Syllabus and Sample Questions", then M.S.(QE)). Take a blank page and write four headings: Mathematics, Statistics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics. Under each, list the topics from the syllabus and mark each one G (comfortable), Y (rusty) or R (new to me).

That page is your map for the next seven months. It takes five minutes, and most students are surprised by how many topics are already G.

Where the dates stand

ISI's admission website still shows the 2026 notice: the admission test was held on 10 May 2026. At the time of writing there is no 2027 notice. If ISI follows last year's pattern the test would fall in early May 2027, but that is a guess, not an announcement. Please check admission.isical.ac.in every few weeks.

How MSQE selection works

Here is what ISI's own documents say.

  • Who can apply: a bachelor's degree of three or more years, in any discipline. The programme runs at Delhi and Kolkata. (Source: ISI prospectus 2026-27.)
  • The written tests: ISI describes them as multiple-choice and short-answer questions in Economics and Mathematics at the undergraduate level. The papers are known as PEA and PEB. In ISI's sample papers, PEA is multiple choice, while PEB asks you to work through problems in parts, with marks shown for each part.
  • The interview: ISI's 2026 merit list for MS (QE) says candidates were shortlisted "on the basis of the performance in the Admission Test(s) held on May 10, 2026". No interview round was announced for this programme in 2026. Interviews were announced for some other ISI programmes, so read the 2027 selection policy when it appears.

ISI has not published the number of questions or the time for each paper on the pages we checked, so we won't guess. The sample papers on ISI's site are the best guide to the style.

What the official syllabus covers

This is the 2026 MSQE syllabus from ISI. The 2027 version has not been published, and syllabi usually change little, but please re-check it when it appears.

AreaTopics
AlgebraBinomial theorem, AP, GP, series, permutations and combinations, theory of polynomial equations
Linear algebraVector spaces, linear transformations, matrix representations and elementary operations, systems of linear equations, eigenvalues
CalculusFunctions and inverses, limits, continuity, differentiation of functions of one or more variables, unconstrained optimisation, definite and indefinite integrals, integration by parts and substitution, monotonicity, convexity and quasi-convexity, constrained optimisation of functions of not more than two variables, implicit function theorem, homogeneous and homothetic functions
StatisticsElementary probability, central tendency, dispersion, correlation and regression, discrete and continuous distributions, binomial, geometric, normal, Poisson and chi-square, conditional probability, Bayes' theorem, sampling, estimation, hypothesis testing
MicroeconomicsTheory of choice, consumer behaviour and production, competitive markets, perfect competition, monopoly, price discrimination, Cournot and Bertrand duopoly, elementary strategic interaction, public goods, externalities, general equilibrium, welfare economics
MacroeconomicsNational income accounting, simple Keynesian model and the multiplier, IS-LM, aggregate demand and supply, money, banking and inflation, Phillips curve, elementary open-economy macroeconomics, Harrod-Domar and Solow models

Two of the four headings are mathematics and statistics, and the economics headings are written at undergraduate level. That is why economics graduates who skip the maths topics struggle, and why engineers and scientists still need to learn how economic models are set up.

ISI also posts sample question papers for PEA and PEB for many past years on its admission site. They are free, official and the closest thing to the real exam. Our ISI MSQE syllabus and PYQs guide shows one way to work through them, and the ISI past-paper library collects them for practice.

A month-by-month plan, November to May

Think of this as a draft to adjust, not a rule. If you start later, shift the blocks. Don't skip them.

November: build the base. Use your G/Y/R map. Start an error log (mistake, then the correct method) and a one-page formula sheet for each maths and statistics topic. At the end of every maths or statistics session, write one complete solution by hand, as if it were a PEB answer. Work on algebra, functions, limits and basic probability first.

December: calculus and linear algebra. Differentiation, optimisation, integration, matrices and determinants. Begin consumer theory alongside, because it uses the same calculus tools and shows you why they matter. As you finish a topic, solve its past questions the same week.

January: statistics and the producer side. Distributions, estimation, correlation and regression, then production, perfect competition and monopoly. At the end of the month, try one older paper under timed conditions, only to see where you stand. Tag each mistake by cause: a concept gap, a calculation slip or running out of time. Each cause needs a different fix.

February: macroeconomics and strategy. National income, the Keynesian model, IS-LM, aggregate demand and supply, the Phillips curve and open-economy basics. Add game theory, duopoly and general equilibrium. If you are also writing IIT JAM, its Economics paper is on 14 February 2027 (official JAM schedule), so keep one single sequence of topics instead of two plans.

March: second pass. NTA's tentative calendar places CUET (PG) 2027 between 2 and 31 March. If you are writing it, plan that stretch separately and keep a short daily maths session going so ISI topics stay warm. Otherwise, go back through every topic, led by past papers. For each topic, write two full answers by hand, timed, and compare them with the solutions.

April: full papers. One full paper every week under exam conditions, reviewed the same day. Spend the rest of the time on your weakest areas from the error log.

Early May: the last week. No new topics. Revise formula sheets and the error log, do short sets to stay in rhythm, sleep properly, and check your admit card and centre on ISI's site as soon as they are released.

Mistakes we see often

  • Treating MSQE as an economics exam. It is a quantitative exam with economics content.
  • Reading solutions instead of writing them. Marks in the descriptive paper come from clear steps.
  • Skipping statistics because it looks easy.
  • Using one source of questions. Mix ISI's own papers with topic-wise practice.
  • Starting new topics in the last week.

Where to go next

If you are comparing ISI with other routes, read how to prepare for ISI MSQE and DSE in the same year, our ISI MSQE preparation guide and the CUET PG 8-month roadmap. For timed practice, see the mock test series.

A fair word on courses: a good plan matters more than any course. If you want guided preparation, EduSure has the ISI MSQE Crash Course for students with a shorter runway and the EcoTopper programme for a longer, multi-exam path. If neither fits, we will say so.

FAQ

When is the ISI MSQE 2027 exam? ISI has not announced it. The 2026 test was on 10 May 2026. Watch admission.isical.ac.in for the 2027 notice.

Who can apply? ISI's 2026 notice asks for a bachelor's degree of three or more years in any discipline. Read the 2027 notice for the final rule.

Is there an interview? In 2026, ISI's MS (QE) merit list was based on the written tests, with no interview round listed. Check the 2027 selection policy.

Can I prepare for ISI along with CUET PG or IIT JAM? Yes. The syllabi overlap, so build one sequence of topics and add exam-specific revision near each exam.

How many past papers should I solve? Work through as many years as ISI has published, topic by topic first, then as full papers closer to the exam.

Please verify dates, eligibility and the exam pattern on the official ISI admissions website, admission.isical.ac.in, before acting on anything here.
