CU Semester 4 — Probability, random variables, standard distributions, sampling theory, and statistical inference.
Course Syllabus
- Sample spaces and events; probability: classical and axiomatic definitions
- Conditional probability and independence; theorem of total probability; Bayes' theorem
- Random variables (discrete and continuous): pmf, pdf, CDF
- Expected values: mean, variance, moments, and moment generating function
- Binomial distribution: pmf, mean, variance, mgf, skewness, and kurtosis
- Poisson distribution: pmf, mean, variance, mgf, skewness, and kurtosis
- Normal distribution: pdf, mean, median, mode, variance, mgf, skewness, kurtosis, inflection points
- Joint distribution of random variables: marginal and conditional pmf/pdf, covariance, correlation
- Complete enumeration vs. sample survey; sampling and non-sampling errors
- Simple Random Sampling (SRSWR and SRSWOR): mean and standard error of sample mean and proportion
- Stratified sampling: basic concept
