CU Semester 4 — Sets, matrices, functions, differentiation, convexity, and optimisation with economic applications.

Course Syllabus

  • Sets and their operations; Cartesian product; open and closed sets; convex sets
  • Matrices: elementary operations, rank, determinant, and inverse of a square matrix
  • Solution of a system of linear equations using Cramer's rule
  • Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
  • Functions of One Real Variable: geometric properties; increasing and decreasing functions
  • Convex and concave functions; quasi-concave and quasi-convex functions
  • Domain and range; monomial and polynomial functions; linear and non-linear functions
  • Explicit and implicit functions; number system
  • Limit and continuity: different limit theorems
  • Differentiability: first-order and second-order differentiation; L'Hôpital's rule
