Mathematical Economics I
CU Semester 4 — Sets, matrices, functions, differentiation, convexity, and optimisation with economic applications.
Course Syllabus
- Sets and their operations; Cartesian product; open and closed sets; convex sets
- Matrices: elementary operations, rank, determinant, and inverse of a square matrix
- Solution of a system of linear equations using Cramer's rule
- Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
- Functions of One Real Variable: geometric properties; increasing and decreasing functions
- Convex and concave functions; quasi-concave and quasi-convex functions
- Domain and range; monomial and polynomial functions; linear and non-linear functions
- Explicit and implicit functions; number system
- Limit and continuity: different limit theorems
- Differentiability: first-order and second-order differentiation; L'Hôpital's rule
