What Happened (And What It Means for the Result)
The key took roughly six weeks because NTA releases a single provisional key only after the entire exam process closes — including the 5 July re-exam. The result follows the same discipline: NTA's expert panel reviews every challenge first, publishes the final key, and only then declares results. Multi-shift normalization also applies — your raw score is not your final score. More on that below.
A delayed key did not signal a problem with your result. It signalled a queue — and the queue is now moving.
What To Do Now: Your 10-Minute Checklist
The challenge window closed on 18 August — no further objections are accepted at any stage. Here is what actually matters now:

- Calculate your probable score: +2 for every correct answer, zero negative marking for wrong or unattempted questions. 150 questions total (Paper 1: 50 × 2 = 100 marks; Paper 2 Economics: 100 × 2 = 200 marks; 300 maximum).
- Treat the provisional key as provisional. The final key — the one results are computed on — is published after NTA's expert panel reviews challenges. Your probable score can shift slightly, in either direction.
- Wait for the result. NTA has not announced a date. It will follow the final key.
Economics Cutoff: What the Recent Cycles Tell Us
Official June 2026 cutoffs will be published with the result. Until then, the honest way to set expectations is the trend:

The direction is unmistakable: Economics cutoffs have risen sharply cycle-on-cycle. Two more evidence points before you form expectations:
- June papers run harder than December papers — both years in our data. EduSure's question-level analysis of the last four Economics papers shows it clearly: June 2025 had 28 Hard and only 13 Easy questions (of 92 analysed); December 2025 had 20 Hard and 35 Easy. If June 2026 followed the June pattern, the paper was likely tougher than December 2025 — which would push cutoffs modestly downward.
- Post-exam student feedback (a poll of ~400 aspirants) found 43% felt the June 2026 paper was slightly tougher than December 2025, while 51% found it easier or similar.
A tougher paper softens cutoffs; a rising candidate base pushes them up. Net expectation: JRF somewhere in the high-220s to low-230s, slightly below the December 2025 benchmark of ~232; NET roughly 195–210. Treat this as an informed range, not a promise — normalization across shifts will have the final word.
Note on category-wise cutoffs: The historical benchmarks above are for the Unreserved category. Reserved category (OBC/SC/ST/EWS) cutoffs are typically 10–25 marks lower for NET and 15–30 marks lower for JRF, but vary significantly by cycle. Normalization, Explained in One Minute
Your exam happened in one shift; thousands wrote it in others, with different question sets. To keep it fair, NTA converts raw marks into percentiles per shift, then merges them. Two consequences:
- Your scorecard percentile may differ from what your raw-score math suggests — in either direction.
- Comparing raw scores with a friend from another shift is meaningless. Compare only after the official result.
If You Clear: What Each Qualification Actually Unlocks
- JRF (Junior Research Fellowship): A funded PhD pathway — monthly fellowship with contingency grants, with promotion from JRF to SRF after two years. Valid for 3 years from the award date.
- Assistant Professor eligibility (NET): Lifetime validity. This is the licence to apply for teaching positions in universities and colleges across India.
- PhD admission only: A third, lower cutoff tier many candidates overlook — it qualifies you specifically for PhD admissions even without JRF funding.
Check your scorecard carefully: it shows your marks, your percentile, and exactly which of these you have qualified for.
If You Miss: The December 2026 Window Is Already Open
Here is the part most result-day articles won't tell you. The December 2026 cycle notification is expected around early October 2026, with the exam in late December–early January. If your score estimate is hovering near the cutoff, do not spend the wait in suspense — spend it in preparation. It is late August; the December notification is roughly six weeks away.
